What Is an Airbnb Superhost?

An Airbnb Superhost is a host that Airbnb recognizes for going above and beyond to provide excellent hospitality. Hosts who meet the Superhost criteria on the quarterly assessment date get the status automatically, with no application (How to become a Superhost (Airbnb Help Center, article 828)).

How Airbnb Superhost status works

Airbnb checks four criteria, each measured over the past 12 months and listed in its Help Center (Superhost requirements (Airbnb Help Center, article 829)).

  • Rating: a 4.8 or higher overall rating.
  • Response rate: a reply to 90% of new messages, and a decision on new reservation requests, within 24 hours.
  • Cancellations: a cancellation rate under 1%, with major disruptive events excluded.
  • Volume: at least 10 reservations, or 3 reservations that total at least 100 nights.

Every 3 months, Airbnb evaluates a host's performance over the past 12 months for all listings on the account. Each assessment runs for 7 days from January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. Because every check looks back over a full year, a cancellation or a low rating stays in the figures for several checks after it happens. The Superhost host page words the volume rule in completed stays: 10 or more stays within a year, or 100 nights over three or more completed stays (Superhost (Airbnb host page)). Both versions set the same kind of bar, which a host can clear with many short bookings or with a few long ones.

What each standard takes in practice, and how a hotel or motel can reach it, is covered in our guide to achieving Airbnb Superhost status.

Why it matters for hotel and rental distribution

The status brings more visibility, earning potential and access to exclusive rewards, in Airbnb's own description. For the earnings side, the published evidence is a pair of comparisons between groups of hosts.

In Q3 2022, the typical Superhost earned 64% more than a regular host (Airbnb celebrates 1 million Superhosts (Airbnb Newsroom, 2023-02-15)). In 2018 the reported gap was 22% over other hosts (Airbnb Touts One of Its Most Valuable Assets as It Prepares for IPO (Skift, 2018-12-03)). Neither figure separates the effect of the badge itself from the hosting record that earned it in the first place.

For a hotel or a rental manager, the account-wide scope is the part that touches distribution. When one account holds many listings, a cancellation on any of them counts toward the same under-1% limit, and the 24-hour reply rule covers reservation requests as well as messages. A hotel that lists several room types as separate listings is still measured as one host, so the weakest listing can pull the whole account below a threshold. A property that sells the same rooms on Airbnb and on other channels also carries a specific risk: if availability is out of date on one channel, a room can sell twice, and the resulting double booking usually ends with one of the two reservations being canceled.

Airbnb Superhost compared with Guest Favorites

The two often overlap: 72% of Guest Favorite listings are run by Superhosts, which leaves 28% run by hosts without the status (How to Earn the Airbnb Guest Favorites Badge (AirDNA, 2025-03-20)). For a property manager, quality is tracked twice: once for the host across the whole account, and once for each home on its own.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Superhost on Airbnb?
It is a status Airbnb created in 2014 to celebrate and reward its top-rated and most experienced hosts. Skift reported more than 600,000 Superhosts in 2018, and in February 2023 Airbnb reported 1 million Superhosts around the world.
What does Superhost mean?
It means the host met all four standards for the past 12 months at the latest quarterly check: an overall rating of 4.8 or higher, replies to 90% of new messages within 24 hours, a cancellation rate under 1%, and at least 10 reservations or 3 reservations totalling 100 nights.
What is the Superhost badge?
The badge is the visible mark of Superhost status. Airbnb says it helps a host stand out even more and could lead to more bookings, though it attaches no figure to that claim. The badge comes with the status itself.
What are the benefits of being a Superhost?
Beyond the visibility, there are two concrete rewards. A host who stays a Superhost for four quarters in a row gets a $100 USD Airbnb coupon, each time that streak is reached. Superhosts also get an extra 20% on top of the standard host referral bonus.

Where Jetstream fits

Superhost status rewards hosts who almost never cancel, and for a property that sells on several channels, few cancellations start with availability that is right everywhere at once. Jetstream builds an AI channel manager that connects a property's reservation system to the channels where guests book and keeps rooms, rates and availability accurate on each one, managed from one place.
