What Are Google Hotel Ads?
Google Hotel Ads are paid listings that show a hotel's up-to-date room prices when a traveler searches for a hotel on Google Search, Google Maps or YouTube. They run as hotel campaigns inside Google Ads, where the advertiser bids for the placement (About hotel campaigns in Google Ads).

How Google Hotel Ads work
The advertiser keeps an up-to-date set of prices for different itineraries in a Hotel Center account, which is linked to its Google Ads account (About hotel campaigns in Google Ads). When a traveler searches, Google first fetches the available prices for each hotel, then runs the auction and shows the ads with the winning bids. A rate from the hotel price feed only qualifies when it matches the traveler's exact itinerary (Bidding overview for hotel ads).
Price accuracy also feeds the auction. Google compares the price in the feed with the price it retrieves from the booking site, scores how accurately prices are displayed, and uses the account's current average score in the bidding auction. To count as accurate, a price must include all applicable and unavoidable taxes and fees (Pricing: Check your price accuracy). An account disabled for breaking the Price Accuracy Policy is one of the listed reasons hotel ads may stop serving (Bidding overview for hotel ads).
The winning ads appear in a hotel booking module that can show photos of the hotel, its amenities and its prices (About hotel campaigns in Google Ads).
Why Google Hotel Ads matter for hotel distribution
Until March 2021, hotel booking links on Google were offered only through paid Hotel Ads. That month, Google made it free for hotels and travel companies around the world to appear in them (After similar moves for shopping and flights, Google makes hotel listings free (TechCrunch)).
Today the two work as layers. A hotel sends its real-time rates and availability to Google through a connectivity partner, and can then add Hotel Ads on top of its Google free booking links while keeping control of its own terms and conditions (Make your hotel stand out on Google).

Among metasearch engines, Google Hotel Ads earned 57% of all metasearch bookings in an earlier study of 954 properties worldwide from 2012 to 2019 (Hotel Advertising: The Rise of Display in the World of Meta (Hospitality Net, 2020)). Other metasearch engines, such as Tripadvisor, trivago and Kayak, are covered on the metasearch page.
