What Is Average Length of Stay (ALOS)?

ALOS, or average length of stay (average LOS), is the average number of nights each stay lasts over a set period: the total nights spent divided by the number of stays (Glossary: Tourism trip length, Eurostat).

How length of stay (LOS) and ALOS work

A hotel calculates ALOS by dividing total room nights sold by total bookings over a defined period, and it can measure booked ALOS, what guests reserved, or stayed ALOS, what they used after cancellations, early departures and extensions (What Is Average Length of Stay (ALOS) in Hotels?, Revfine). Official tourism statistics count on a guest basis instead. There, ALOS is the average number of nights spent per arrival (Statistics on tourism for the enlargement countries, Eurostat). Eurostat also splits tourism trips into short trips of one to three nights and long trips of four nights or more (Glossary: Tourism trip length, Eurostat). On that trip basis, EU residents spend an average of 3.9 nights on domestic trips and 7.8 nights on foreign trips (Tourism statistics: characteristics of tourism trips, Eurostat).

Keep the basis consistent when you compare figures. Room nights per booking at one hotel and nights per arrival or per trip across a country measure different things, so a hotel's own ALOS belongs next to its own history and its own channels.

Why it matters for hotel distribution

Two hotels can post identical occupancy with different arrival volumes, and the one with fewer arrivals spends less on commission, cleaning and front desk labour, because each night after the first avoids a new commission, a new arrival clean and a new check-in (What Is Average Length of Stay (ALOS) in Hotels?, Revfine). Each channel also brings its own stay pattern. Most bookings on Booking.com last one or two nights, so strict three-night minimums can hide a property from typical search results (Guide on setting booking restrictions, Booking.com for Partners). Aligning length-of-stay and no-arrival restrictions with actual demand lets a property keep control of operations while staying visible for the stays it wants to accept (Guide on setting booking restrictions, Booking.com for Partners).

Airbnb counts trips of 28 days or more as long-term stays, and in Q4 2025 its short-term stays in North America grew faster than its long-term stays (Airbnb Q4 2025 Shareholder Letter). Stay length also varies by market: in Big Bear, 58% of short-term rental stays are one or two nights, while three-night stays make up 29% to 32% of reservations in Nashville, New Orleans, Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge and Charleston (Airbnb Length of Stay: Set Minimum Stays by Market, AirDNA). Length of stay changes timing too: in US short-term rentals, median lead time is 13 days for one-night stays, 30 days for three-night stays and 54 days for stays of one to two weeks, and coastal week-long stays book a median of 83 days ahead (Airbnb Length of Stay: Set Minimum Stays by Market, AirDNA).

Changes in ALOS can move occupancy. In a 2021 look at short-term rentals, ALOS in Miami and Philadelphia rose to more than a week from 2019 to 2020, and the shift was called the hidden driver for occupancy (A Look at Alternative Accommodations Versus Hotels During Pandemic Year, CoStar News).

Used well in high-demand periods, length-of-stay controls help a hotel manage demand and maximize revenue; used badly, they can lower RevPAR, and guests may leave early (The Dos and Don'ts of Length of Stay, eCornell). Booking.com lets partners set a minimum and maximum length of stay, plus a length of stay that applies only to a given arrival date (Guide on setting booking restrictions, Booking.com for Partners). How those rules work is covered under rate restrictions.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate average length of stay?
Divide the total nights in a period by the number of stays in the same period. A hotel uses room nights sold divided by bookings, so 1,200 room nights across 400 bookings gives an ALOS of 3 nights. Tourism statistics divide nights spent by guest arrivals or by trips. Choose one basis and keep it whenever you compare months, channels or properties.
How do you calculate length of stay in a hotel?
Count the nights in the reservation, from the check-in date to the check-out date. A guest who arrives on Friday and leaves on Monday stays three nights. Averaging that number across every booking in a period gives the hotel's ALOS. Count nights, not days: the check-out date is not a night stayed.
Why is average length of stay important?
ALOS shows how many arrivals it takes to fill the same number of nights. Fewer, longer stays mean fewer commissions, arrival cleans and check-ins at the same occupancy. Tracking it by channel shows which sources fill the calendar with fewer arrivals, so a property can see where its longest stays come from.
How long do guests stay on average?
It depends on the basis and the property type. Across hotels and similar accommodation in the EU-27, Eurostat estimated the average at 2.5 nights per arrival in 2018. A Hilton executive gave Homewood Suites an ALOS of 3.2 nights in 2023, with 44% of suites booked by guests staying five nights or more, and one developer put the average at 45 to 60 nights across his own economy and lower-midscale extended-stay portfolio.

Where Jetstream fits

ALOS on each channel follows the stay rules and availability that channel shows, so those settings need to match what the property intends. Jetstream builds an AI channel manager that connects a property's reservation system to the channels where guests book and keeps rooms, rates and availability accurate on each one, managed from one place.
